The music industry finds genre a very useful tool to describe a piece of music. Genre provides managers and PR persons a way to promoting a piece of music. A generic description provides a musical point of reference. For example, fans of a particular type of music tend to gravitate to the same venues and stores, listen to the same radio stations, watch the same movies, and frequent the same websites.

Genre is also useful in determining which labels to approach for reaching a target audience. It is a useful tool when determining whether to include merchandise in ones sales.
